TTT – Todd’s Tennis Takes

I’ve been doing my TTT Blog for a couple years now on SportsCity.com, and they have archived my old pieces for you diehards.  The following is my latest post, a short profile on a young up-and-comer.

Grigor Dimitrov

So the French is over, and it’s time to meet the reigning Wimbledon junior champion, Grigor Dimitrov.  He won both Wimby and the US in juniors last year, and he just turned 18 four weeks ago. He lost to Gilles Simon 7-5 in the 3rd set in Feb. , then beat Berdych at Rotterdam before losing 6-2 in the 3rd to Nadal, also in Feb. This week he lost to Simon at Queens Club 7-6, 7-6 in the 2nd round, after winning his 1st round match as a 361st ranked wildcard over 82nd ranked Ivan Navarro-Pastor – 279 spots above him.

He’s legit; a 6’ 1” slender righty that idolizes Fed and aspires to a #1 ranking.  His dad is a tennis teacher, mom a sport coach.  It’s in his blood, and seems to be in his heart, judging from his early impressive performances in main level ATP events.

Pretty soon he won’t need wildcards, though he’ll get one into the main draw at Wimbledon this year.  Let’s hope he gets a nice draw and can do some damage.  Either way, I think he’s top 200 by year end.
