Gulbis Update in Rome

After taking Federer out in the 2nd round, Gulbis took on local hero Fillipo Volandri of Italy, and going against a very partisan crowd, took him out 7-6 in the 3rd.  Volandri, clearly inspired by the crowd, played far above his ranking of 152.  Next up was Feliciano Lopez of Spain in the quarterfinals.  Lopez is a veteran lefty ranked 35th in the world that likes to go to net a lot, and has more variety than most on his shots.  The first set was tight, Gulbis holding off a set point for Lopez at 4-5, before finally taking the set 7-6 in a tiebreaker.  Gulbis’ dropshot was working great during the match, and he cruised in the second set 6-1 to set up a semifinal showdown with the King of Clay, Rafael Nadal.  I’m watching the match as I type this right now, Gubis down a break early in the first set, 2-4.

The good news is, Gulbis now has a very good chance to be seeded for the French Open later in the month.  Look for a Todd’s Tennis Takes French Open Preview in a couple weeks.
