Todd’s Tennis Takes – Gulbis-Federer Rematch, Madrid QF’s

Since taking down Fed in round 2 at Rome, Gulbis has showed what a non-fluke that match was.  He made the semi’s at Rome, and has looked great in reaching the QF’s in Madrid – not losing a set yet in beating two tourney winners from last week, Montanes & Youzhny, as well as Feliciano Lopez again (beat him in QF’s of Rome).

Fed dismantled Wawrinka, who never found a solid rythm after breaking Fed to open the match. Fed looked good, but Gulbis is much heavier power to deal with, and very few opportunities to break.  I’ll take EG to repeat his feat in three.

Other QF Matchups:

Nadal-Ferrer…Juicy matchup – can Murray do it on the dirt?  He cruised vs. pedestrian Hanescu in the 3rd, Ferrer is a whole new veteran dogfighting beast to get through to make the semis here…I’ll take Speedy Spaniard in 3.

Melzer-Almagro…Melzer a surprise here after taking Verdasco out in straight sets in round 3, letting Spanish clay court specialist Almagro know he’s ready for business.  Almagro ends the Austrian’s run in 2 though.

Monfils-Nadal…Nadal in two tight sets…two best clay defenders around?  What athleticism will be on display!!
