TTT – Aussie Open Update #5

Nice victory for the speedy youngster from Japan, Kei Nishikori, as he cruised to a 6-4, 6-3, 0-6, 6-3 win over Florian Mayer, who had upset Davydenko in round 1. Watch out for Nish to break into the top 50 this year (currently #82). Robin Haase played very well in taking out the 26 seed Juan Monaco in straight sets – not a real upset there, as Monaco would rather be on the dirt, and Haase has playing very well lately, shooting up the rankings last year from #451 to #65 at the close of 2010. Part of it was a comeback from injury (he was never playing at a sub 400 level), but he’s also a talented and improving young player to watch out for, now in his first Grand Slam 3rd round.

Tommy Robredo had a nice victory over American Mardy Fish in 4 sets after losing the first. But definitely the matches of the day were Almagro/Andreev, won by Almagro in 5 after saving a match point, and Tipsarevic/Verdasco, yet another match point saved, this time by Verdasco, as the Spanish 9 seed survived the 4th set and crushed Tipsy in the 5th 6-0. Tipsy’s match point was a volley on top of the net…OUCH!!!

Dimitrov/Wawrinka is starting very shortly as I type this…looking forward, but probably won’t be able to stay up all night to watch it (11:36pm in L.A., been here 12 hours now). Will definitely have a morning TTT update to report on the Waw/Dimitrov battle.
