TTT – Aussie Open Update #6

Wow…Fed struggles with a resurgent Gilles Simon, who looks to regain the form he had a couple years ago when he reached #6 in the world back in May 2009. Fed was up two sets and cruising, having llost only 5 of the first 17 games of the match, but then lost the next two sets 6-4. He took the 5th 6-3…he next plays Xavier Malisse, the talented Belgian who has been playing very well lately, even though he turned 30 last summer – this match could be interesting.

My guy Dimitrov, the 19 yr old riser from Bulgaria, couldn’t put a scare into Wawrinka, losing 5, 3, and 3. That does set up a VERY good 3rd round encounter with Gael Monfils, who had a much easier time with journeyman Frederico Gil in round 2, beating him in 4 sets. Of course, Monfils barely survived his 1st round battle with de Bakker two days ago. Djoker also won his late night match, in 4 sets, as did his Serbian countryman Victor Troicki, also in 4 over Marathon Man Nicolas Mahut (Wimby vs Isner, of course).

By far the most interesting match today is Marcos Baghdatis vs. Juan Martin Del Potro. A former Aussie finalist (Bags in 2006) vs a former US Open champion (DP in 2009). I’ll take Bags in a tight match.
