TTT – Aussie Open Update #10

So Dolgop goes down 2 sets to 1 and then crushes Tsonga 6-1, 6-1 in the last two sets, Tsonga running out of gas while the little whirling dervish Dolgopolov continued to fly around the court stinging groundstrokes. The unforced errors piled up for Tsonga, 58 in total for the match compared to Dolgop’s 26. Now…can he handle the hard flat groundstroke¬†heat from Soderling? Tune in Sunday to find out.

In other matches, Bags retired with a bad pinky (huh?) in his match with Jurgen Melzer last night, down 2 sets to 1 and 4-3 in the 4th. He had a bad groin going into the tourney, pulling out of a tuneup event 1 week prior to the Aussie. Melzer has had quite a career revival the last few years, going from #60 at the end of 2007 to his current career high spot of #11…and he turns 30 this May – very surprising and unusual.

In other matches yesterday, Nadal, Soderling, Ferrer, and Murray all dominated, winning in 3 sets. There are two very interesting matches today – Roddick/Wawrinka, where Roddick is a slight underdog with the oddsmakers, and Verdasco/Berdych – the 2009 Spanish semifinalist here (epic 5 set loss to Nadal) vs the tall Czech who made the semi’s of the French and finals of Wimbledon last year. Shoud be a good one, but I’ll take Berd Dog in 4 sets. As for Roddick/Wawrinka, I’ll take the Swiss #2 – he’s playing great this week.
