TTT – Aussie Open Update #11

So Fed destroys Wawrinka 6-1, 6-3, 6-3, improving his lifetime record against his fellow Swiss to 7-1. That sets up a great semifinal matchup with Djokovic, who handled Berdych quite easily 6-1, 7-6(5), 6-1. Fed is 13-6 against Djoker lifetime, with a surprising 3 of those wins coming since his heartbreaking US Open semifinal defeat to the Serbian – Shanghai Masters, Basel, and the World Tour Finals in London – Fed lost only 1 set in those 3 fall 2010 meetings.

Dolgopolov took down Soderling in a surprisingly easy 5th set on Sunday to set up a quarterfinal encounter with Andy Murray. Finally he’ll be playing a person who’s faster than himself…and also someone who plays the cat & mouse game and is not a pure power player. It’ll be an interesting match to watch, but I can’t imagine that the upsets will continue for the young (22) Ukranian.

Nadal had no problems with Cilic the other night, winning in three easy sets. He had a scramble shot in the match that was one of the most insane gets ever. He sprinted from his forehand corner at the baseline all the way up to his backhand at the net, barely got to the ball in time, and then had the ability and touch to hit a slice angle volley that cleared the net by 2 inches before softly bouncing for a winner near the far sideline – Brad Gilbert was amazed, I was amazed, and I’m sure everyone else watching was stupified – his speed is ridiculous, and then to make the shot as well – I’m speechless.

Very much looking forward to the Fed/Djoker semi – I think the Serb can pull off the upset. As for tonight’s Nadal/Ferrer match – I think Ferrer will be lucky to win 8 games, and I think Nadal will take out whomever he meets in the semis too, albeit with a little more trouble than his Ferrer match.
