NBA Playoff Awards

Wow…what a start to the playoffs this weekend! 2 amazing PG efforts sandwiched 6 other drama-filled playoff games, the best rising to the occasion in all games. Neither Rose (39, 6 asst, 3 blk, 19 FTM) nor Westy (31, 6 asst, 7 reb, 3 treys) won the Wilt yesterday, that’s how good the games & performances were this weekend.
All 8 games were tight in the 4th Q, and we saw 3 higher seeds lose, including the defending champs and the best record in the West – Lakers & Spurs. The OKC/Den first half was some of the most exciting basketball I’ve ever watched. A bunch of great young athletes all in their prime making exciting, impressive plays. Westy shined the brightest, as when he turns on the intensity, he becomes an amazing, freakish athlete to watch. Love this guy.
The Wilt Chamberlain Award:  The Hornets  Chris Paul — 33 pts, 7 reb, 14 asst, 9 FTM, 4 stl, 0 blk, 2 treys, and 11-18 FG%…Jeez – the numbers alone are ridiculous, fat production all over the place. And watching the game, seeing him hit impressive jump shots late in the game after amazing penetration and passing earlier, it was a performance to remind you he’s one of the best 6 PGs of all time (1 of 7 20pts-10asst players in league hisory, & did it twice). They got nothing from Okafor (4 pts, 2 reb, 6 fouls) in the game, West is out, Ariza shot 2-13…J Jack & Aaron Gray were his next best players yesterday, and yet they still won, silencing the glamorous Laker fans at Staples. I love seeing silent Laker crowds.
The Charles Smith Award:  Lakers’  Pau Gasol — 8 pts, 6 reb, 6 asst, 4 FTM, 0 stl, 2 blk, 0 treys, and 2-9 FG%…Robin did not show up…Batman finally faltered…the Lakers have worries? Their energy didn’t come close to the Hornets, and their age and lack of athleticism really showed. Pau is still a skinny soft Euro in the end, though one of the better ones to ever play here (there haven’t been a lot of truly good, productive Euros who’ve panned out). Other stinky PF efforts came from B Bass (17 min, 0-4, 0 pts, 2 reb) and Serge Ibaka (1-8, only 5 reb, though did have 4 blks, some very impressive).
New Bozo Name
Charles Smith what better name for poor playoff performance then Mr. Smith, he of the infamous 4 straight under the hoop misses to try to get the Knicks a 3-2 lead over the Bulls in the 1993 Playoffs. It was MJ, H Grant, & Pippen harassing him under the hoop – how appropriate, the best 3 Bulls were doing the job. Smith’s career playoff numbers: 9.3 pts, 4.0 rebs.
