TTT – French Open Update, Day 6

Quickie Recap today: Wawrinka did indeed take Tsonga out in 5 sets, but spotted the Frenchman a 2 set advantage first. Tsonga was two points away from winning the match in the 3rd set tiebreaker, but eventually ended up netting a basic forehand to give the set to Wawrinka. Tsonga was clearly less energetic in the 4th and 5th sets, losing 6-2, 6-3.

Djoker/Del Potro was great stuff for the 2 sets they got in today, some unbelievable rallies and shots. Djoker took the first set, but lost the second, so the match is basically a best of 3 sets encounter now, 3rd match up tomorrow on Court Suzanne Lenglen. DP looked very strong, those same blistering flat groundstrokes combined with surprisingly good defense for a 6′ 6″ guy…this might be a worrisome match for Djoker fans. The other men’s matches today were relatively pedestrian: Fed won in 3 easy sets, while Gasquet, Ferrer, Albert Montanes, and Monfils also won in straight sets. Fabio Fognini took 4 sets to take out Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.

The big match of the day tomorrow, other than the DP/Djoker conclusion, pits Alexandr Dolgopolov against Viktor Troicki, the 15 seed. Dolgop is one of the most entertaining, unpredictable players on the tour, possessing a vast array of shots including slices, drop shots, extreme angles, and sharp, flat, stinging groundstrokes. And for a little guy, he packs quite a wallop on his first serve, often getting it up to 130mph. As for the 25 yr old Serbian Troicki, I haven’t seen much of him, but he’s quietly gotten his rank up to 16 in the world, up from 40 last year at this time. The oddsmakers have installed Dolgop as a slight favorite, despite his relative youth (22 yrs old) and inexperience compared to Troicki. I agree.
