NBA Awards – 11/15/12

Wednesday Night Activity
Behind solid efforts from Griffin (20, 14, 6 asst), CP III (16, 10 asst, 4 stl) and Jamal Crawford (22, 7-11 shooting), the Paper Clips took down the defending champ Heat 107-100 at Staples. Lebron did his thing (30, 5 reb, 7 asst) but Wade & Bosh combined for just 17 pts on 5-23 shooting – OUCH!…Harden finally hit 30 pts again in Houston’s tight 100-96 win over the Hornets, despite N.O. PG Greivis Vasquez’ best game as a pro – 24, 9 asst, 5 rebs, 3 treys…Boston held off Utah 98-93 at home as Rondo continued his double-digit dimes streak – 10 assists in the gm, streak now at 32…The red-hot Grizzlies (6 gm win streak) took out the Thunder in OKC on national TV, 107-97. Interesting way the game went – OKC raced out to a 10 pt lead by 1st Quarter’s end, then Mem took a 9 point halftime lead, then basically remained up by 10 most of the 2nd half as Gay (28, 6, 5 dimes) and Randolph (20, 11) led the way…The Charlotte Bobcats (4-3) took out the T-Wolves 89-87 in Minn, and would be the 7 seed in the East if the playoffs started today! Yeah it’s early, but coming off a worst ever NBA record of 7-59 a year ago, no one expected this much success…Noah (21, 12, 5 asst) and Boozer (28, 14) led the Bulls to an OT 112-106 win at Phx, who got another big effort from Scola (24, 14) but not much else…Dallas (5-4) kept Washington (0-7) winless as no Wizard starter was able to muster up more than 11 pts…The Indiana Pacers (3-6) have problems. Granger is out half the year at a minimum w/ a potentially chronic knee issue, Paul George hasn’t progressed so far this yr as many thought he would, and Roy Hibbert’s play has dropped from from last year’s level. They needed 32 4th Q pts last night to muster up 84 for the game. They haven’t hit 100 pts in regulation yet this season, and have scored under 90 pts in 6 of their 9 games. They were down 82-53 to Mil last night after 3 quarters before losing their 5th out of their last 6 games, 99-84…Det waxed the ice-cold 76ers (shot 29.8%) 94-76 as Greg Monroe had 19, 18, and 6 dimes…Finally, G.S. took out the visiting Hawks 92-88 behind rookie Harrison Barnes’ best game as a pro – 19 pts, 13 rebs.
The Akeem Olajuwon Award —  Kevin Durant  —  34 pts, 10 rebs, 5 asst, 9 FTM, 3 stl, 2 blk, 1 trey, and 12-21 shooting…KD finally breaks the 30 point barrier in the 9th game of the season…prior years? 17th game rookie year, 7th game in both 2008-09 & ’09-’10, 1st game last season and the year before. Durant did it all in this game, but didn’t get enough help from an again scattershot Westy (6-19, though did have 13 dimes), and a mysteriously quiet Kevin Martin (33 min, just 1-4 from the floor, only 4 free throw attempts). It doesn’t seem the Thunder have fully acclimated to life post-Harden and with Martin, as they’re now 6-3 on the year. But Durant is having his most well-rounded season to date so far, now at 24.2, 10.3, 4 asst, 1.6 for stls & blks, and shooting 49.4%.
The Steve Stipanovich Award —  Bradley Beal  —  8 pts, 1 rebs, 2 asst, 0 FTM, 1 stl, 0 blk, 2 treys, and 3-14 shooting in 27 minutes of rookie hopelessness…Ahhhhh – my 12th round rookie selection, the 4th overall pick of the 2012 Draft out of Florida, playing like a 19 yr old would. This tragic performance comes on the heels of Tuesday night’s 1-11 disaster, bringing his shooting percentage the last two games to 16% on 25 attempts. He did have some nice success last week, posting a 3-game stretch of 16, 22, and then 17 pts, but these last two nightmares have now brought his FG% down to 32.9% on the year. He does hold the distinction of being the 7th youngest player ever to start opening night for his team…the 6 younger than him: LeBron, D Howard, A Bynum, Darius Miles, Durant, and fellow 2012 rookie Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.
Bledsoe Rejects The Ultimate Guard Rejector
Dwyane Wade is likely the best shot-blocking guard ever (1.0/gm for career)…last night, Clipper super-sub and freak athlete Eric Bledsoe, John Wall’s backcourt mate from Kentucky, gave the master a taste of his own medicine in dramatic, athletic style.
