NBA Awards – Tues 11/20/12

Monday Night Activity
An injured, inept Wizards team was just what the Dr. ordered for a struggling Indy squad last night as the Pacers got big efforts from their big men Hibbert & West in a 96-89 victory, keeping the Wiz winless at 0-9…The Bobcats improved to 4-2 at home and 5-4 overall as they won a back-n-forth affair with the Bucks, 102-98, behind strong nights from Sessions (23/4/4), Byron Mullens (19, 9 rebs), and rookie SF M. Kidd-Gilchrist (15/9/4). The rookie will be known as M K-G from here on out in the Awards, way too long a name…In another craptastic game similar to Indy/NY Sunday, Olo & Atl entertained no one in an 81-72 Hawks victory that saw only Glen Davis (11 pts) break into double-digits for the Magic, while only Lou Williams (14) & Al Horford (15) did so for Atl. Both teams shot under 40%…The Nuggets snapped the Grizzlies’ 8 game winning streak in Mem, 97-92, behind Danilo Gallinari’s 26 pts, and Javale McGee’s 15 & 8 in just 17 min off the bench (why only 17 min? perplexing…)…Golden St. went into Dal and took down the Mavs in OT, 105-101. Rookie Harrison Barnes continued his strong play of late, going off for 20 & 12 rebs, while D. Lee (17, 19 rebs) and Curry (30, 9 asst) were also nice. Kaman (18/17) and Mayo (27/5/4 asst) were solid for Dallas…The Clippers beat the Spurs for the 2nd time this year, this time in Texas, 92-87. No Clip had 20 pts but their bench came thru again as Matt Barnes (14/9/3 stls) and Eric Bledsoe (9/5/3 asst, 2 stl in 22 min) led the subs on a rare off night for Mr. Instant Offense (Jamal Crawford just 4-14, but averaging 19.7 in 28.2 min/gm on the year)…Finally, the Jazz beat the Rockets 102-91 as Harden had a cold (just 17 min, 1-6), and the rest of the team shot cold (34.9%). Al Jeff had 16 rebs for Utah, but no player scored more than 15 for the Jazz, as they only shot 40.2% in the game.

The Akeem Olajuwon Award —  David West  —  30 pts, 8 rebs, 3 asst, 10 FTM, 1 stl, 4 blk, 0 treys, and 10-14 shooting…West has now been a rock-solid, even overachieving PF in the league for 10 years now. Originally the 18th pick in the legendary 2003 Draft (LeBron, Wade, Melo, Bosh…), West spent two seasons learning the ropes before busting out with 17.1 & 7.4 rebs on 51.2% FGs his 3rd year. He then went on to average over 20 pts/gm twice, and over 8 rebs/gm 3 times, all the while shooting a decent percentage (career 48.9%). At the end of the 2010-11 season he tore his ACL, but was healthy on opening night in 2011-12 and never missed a game last season. He is leading the Pacers at 16.2 pts/gm this year, while grabbing 8.1 rebs and fly swatting a career best 1.3/gm. Stephen Curry was also large last night with 30, 9 asst, 6 rebs, 10 FTM, 2 stls, and 3 treys.

The Steve Stipanovich Award — Omer Asik  —  2 pts, 7 rebs, 0 asst, 2 FTM, 0 stl, 2 blk, 0 treys, and 0-5 shooting in 28 minutes…Asik was a backup C in Chicago for two seasons before signing a 3 yr, $25m deal with Houston this past summer. The Turkish giant (7’0″, 255) is actually 3rd in the league in rebs (12.3) after 11 games, while also scoring 10 pts a night and blocking just over one shot a night as well (1.2). He was actually drafted in 2008 by Portland, traded two days later to the bulls, but then stayed in Europe a couple more season before finally joining the Association. This was just the 3rd time he failed to reach double-digit rebs this year, but the 2nd time he’s had an 0-fer (he went 0-7 opening night, though he pulled down a career-high 19 boards). He has not missed a game yet in his 2+ year career. G.S.’s Klay Thompson was also bad last night, missing 12 of his 14 shots and grabbing only 3 boards in 42 awful minutes…he’s now shooting just 33.3% for the year.
