NBA Awards 12/13/12

Wed Night Headlines
1) Wade – 3rd Best SG All-Time? – The Warriors, coached by legendary PG Mark Jackson (#3 all-time assts, #14 asst/gm @ 7.97), upset the Heat 97-95 in Miami Wednesday. Rookie Draymond Green, who played 30 minutes, got open for a layup in the final seconds for Golden St. Green ended up w/ 7 pts, 7 rebs, & 2 stl in 30 min of playing time, while Klay Thompson (27/7/4 asst, 5 treys) & D Lee (22/13) led the Warriors, winning their 5th straight and 12th of last 15 gms. Prior to the game, coach Jackson said he believes Wade (who had 14/5/4 asst & 3 stl in 29 min) is the third-best shooting guard in NBA history behind MJ and Kobe…”I see a guy I love as a basketball fan,” Jackson said of Wade. I agree with 3rd best…even if he is declining.
2) Joshua Tree Flexes, Magic Fool No One – In Orlando, the Joshua Tree had 16/11/3 & 5 blks for the Hawks in an 86-80 win over the Magic while Orlando had only one player clear 14 pts – Afflalo with 16 on 6-16 shooting. Atlanta improves to 13-6 after winning their 9th of last 11 gms while Orlando falls to 8-13…just 1/2 gm behind the Lakers.
3) Boston Takes Double OT Thrilller at Home 117-115 Behind Rondo, Pierce – Rajon Rondo was just a rebound away from another triple double (16/9/15 asst) while PP had 34/6 rebs, 4 stl, 9 FTM and 3 long bombs as the Celtics took down the visiting Mavs in double OT. D Collison (20/5/6 asst, 3 stl, & 8-11), Matrix (16/11/7 asst), & Mayo 24/6 rebs, 2 stl, 10-19) were big for Dallas.

Other Wed Games
The Nets finally snapped a 5 game losing streak after beating the Raptors 94-88. Playing Toronto is a good way to feel confident these days, as our NBA neighbors to the North are now 4-19. Ed Davis started and careered for the Raptors, scoring 24 while pulling down 12 rebs and nabbing 3 stls, too. Lowry was out and as usual, Calderon was quite generous in his place, dishing out 15 dimes but scoring just 10 on 4-13 shooting. Joe Johnson paced Brooklyn’s victory with 23 while four other Nets hit double figures….One night after taking the Lakers down at home, Cleveland hit the road, going into Indianapolis and losing to the Pacers 96-81. CJ Miles scored 28 pts for the 2nd night in a row, but Kyrie crashed hard (9 pts, 1 reb, 4 asst, 4-12) while Paul George (27/7 rebs) and David West (18/9/7 asst & 2 blk) led the charge for Indy….Joakim Noah (21/7/5 & 3 blks) led four Bulls starters in double figures as Chicago took down Philly 96-89 despite another strong Jrue Holiday effort – 26/5/9 asst, & 2 stl….The Clippers, moving in the opposite direction of the Lakers, won their 8th in a row over Charlotte 100-94, their longest winning streak in 21 years. CP III was strong (19/5/10 asst) while 6’1″ energizer bunny Eric Bledsoe put up a PF/C stat line in 22 min – 13 pts, 8 rebs, 2 blks, 5-9 shooting. And now Odom has lost some weight while playing himself into shape the last month, grabbing 9 rebs and blocking 3 shots in 24 minutes off the bench. His Nov numbers: 1.6 pts, 2.8 rebs, .7 asst and 22.7% shooting in 12.7 min/night. Dec: 5.1 pts, 7 rebs, 2 asst, 43.6% in 22 min/night. The Clippers, now 16-6, just got better – watch out! Likely their best team ever….The Bucks had few problems with the Kings, handling them 98-85 behind a monster effort from Monta Ellis (17/8/11 asst) and a solid night from Ilyasova off the bench – 16/14 with 2 stls, 2 blks….Houston got 31 from Harden, 16 rebs from Omer Asik, and a solid 18/8 rebs from Chandler Parsons in defeating the Wizards 99-93. Beal (20, 6 asst) and Crawford (17/8/5 asst) were nice for Washington, though they shot a combined 12-33 (36.4%). Okafor awoke from his slumber to post 19/6 & 2 blks on 9-12 shooting in the loss….The Thunder (18-4) trailed New Orleans (5-16) by 11 in the 3rd Q at home before rallying to win by four, 92-88. Durant was huge – 35, 9 rebs, & 12 FTM on 11-20 from the floor….The Nuggets went into Minn looking to go over .500 on the year, but a last second trey attempt missed and they lost by three, 108-105. Kevin Love was off, missing 14 of his 17 shots, but C Nikola Pekovic came through with 22/11 & 2 blks while hitting 7 of 10 shots and all 8 free throw attempts. PF Kenneth Faried emerged from a 4-game slump to post 26/14 & 3 stls for Denver….Rudy (22/11, 2 stl, 2 blk), Zach (18/10) and M Gasol (15, 6 blks) did their thing but Memphis got weak efforts from their guards and bench as Phx won 82-80 on a short hook shot by Goran Dragic w/ under a second left. Dragic ended the game with 12/5/8 asst while Jared Dudley had his best gm of the season, maybe his career, in going off for 15/9/5 asst & 3 stls while shooting 50%. Michael Beasley somehow managed to get off 11 shots in just 10 minutes off the bench for the Suns, but only made 2 of them….Finally, Utah improved to 9-1 at home after taking down San Antonio 99-96 on a Mo-Will 3 pointer at the buzzer. Millsap paced the Jazz with 24/12/5 asst and 10-15 shooting while Gordon Hayward came off the bench for his best effort of the season – 19/7/6 asst & 4 treys.

The Akeem Olajuwon Award — Tim Duncan  —  22 pts, 21 rebs, 1 asst, 6 FTM, 1 stl, 6 blk, 0 treys, and 8-17 shooting…20/20 vision for Dunc as his strong 2012-13 campaign continues, his 16th season in the league. His averages of 17.8, 10.4 rebs, 2.5 asst, 3.5 FTM, .8 stl, 2.5 blk, and 51.5% shooting make him the #10 player in our fantasy hoops league – not bad for a 36 yr old playing in his 1,323rd career game, including the post-season.

The Jerome Moiso Award —  Anthony Morrow —  4 pts, 0 rebs, 1 asst, 0 FTM, 1 stl, 0 blk, 0 treys, and 2-11 shooting in 24 poor minutes…Morrow is a shooter, and usually a pretty good one, but does not do much else. He burst upon the scene in Nov 2008, when the undrafted rookie made his first career start and exploded for 37 pts and 11 rebs while hitting 15 of his 20 shots. He ended up averaging just over 10 pts/gm that year while shooting 47.8% from the floor, and 46.7 from downtown. Those percentages remain his career high, while he averaged a career best 13.2 pts/gm in the 2010-11 season playing for New Jersey. But his minutes and production have fallen off since then, and he’s down to just 13.4 min/night with the Hawks now, posting just 5.5 pts, 1.1 reb, and just .3 asst/gm while shooting 43%.
